Celtic's manager, Martin O'Neill, has sent a message to the fans, assuring them that the club is actively pursuing a January signing spree. With concerns about Jota's long-term absence due to a knee injury, O'Neill wants to strengthen his squad.
O'Neill, who returned as interim boss this season, has already recalled center-back Stephen Welsh from his loan at Motherwell and brought in Mexican defender Julian Araujo on loan from Bournemouth. However, the departure of manager Wilfried Nancy and head of football operations Paul Tisdale adds an extra layer of complexity to the transfer window.
The Hunt for Reinforcements
O'Neill, 73, has been selective in his target choices, discarding some suggestions while expressing confidence that the club is close to bolstering its ranks. He emphasized the club's efforts, stating, "We are really trying, honestly."
"I don't have any impediments from the board," O'Neill added. "We all want to do something, and I'm not blaming anyone. We will try to bring in new players."
But here's where it gets controversial: O'Neill admits that the search for suitable players is challenging. "It's about looking around to see what could fit for us at this stage," he said. "We might have to consider loan deals for players we wouldn't normally sign for three or four years."
O'Neill has an idea about a player he wants, but the process involves dealing with clubs and players, and there's no guarantee his preferred choices will join Celtic. "Some people I'd really like may choose to go elsewhere," he said. "If I had more preparation, I could have acted more quickly."
And this is the part most people miss: Jota's absence is a significant blow. The Portuguese attacker, in his second stint at Celtic, has been out since April with a knee injury. While there was hope he'd return for the final months of the season, O'Neill believes Jota is unlikely to feature again this campaign. "I don't see Jota being back this season," he said. "Alistair Johnston might make a comeback in March, which would be great news. But for the longer-term injuries, I'm not optimistic."
So, Celtic fans, what do you think? Are you satisfied with the club's efforts in the transfer window? Or do you think more could be done to strengthen the squad? Let's discuss in the comments!
