This freshwater crocodile, now a celebrity in the making, embarked on an unexpected journey down a suburban creek, far from its tropical home. The reptile, awaiting its official name, was first spotted on a Saturday afternoon, prompting a call to the Australian Reptile Park's manager.
But capturing this adventurous croc wasn't an easy feat. Despite multiple attempts, the team's initial efforts to retrieve the meter-long creature from the creekside pond proved unsuccessful. It wasn't until Sunday night, armed with paddles, head torches, and an abundance of patience, that Billy Collett and his team finally succeeded.
"After an hour of searching on Sunday, we were losing hope," Collett shared with AAP. But fate had other plans. As the team prepared to head further downstream, a glimpse of the croc's eye caught their attention, leading to a quiet yet decisive approach.
"I jumped off the boat and swam underneath her, securing her safely," Collett recalled, describing the moment as nothing short of exhilarating.
The Australian Reptile Park celebrated the rescue with an image of Collett, chest-deep in the creek, proudly holding the rescued crocodile. The creature had passed its health check with flying colors, earning it a temporary stay at the Central Coast park while authorities investigate its unexpected appearance in NSW's second-largest city.
"She wouldn't have survived long in that salty creek, especially with winter approaching," Collett emphasized. Alex Martinovich, the park's marketing manager, believes the crocodile was likely abandoned after being kept as an illegal pet.
"She was just looking for a safe haven," Martinovich told AAP, shedding light on the challenges of owning such exotic pets. "Once a croc reaches a meter in length, even a freshwater one, it becomes a significant challenge to care for.
