A bitter dispute has erupted in Rothesay, New Brunswick, over the iconic ice-fishing shacks that have long been a fixture on the Kennebasis River. The town's decision to ban these traditional shacks has sparked controversy and divided opinions among locals and visitors alike.
For years, these colorful, customized shacks have been a beloved part of the winter village, attracting both locals and tourists from around the world. However, the town's patience has worn thin due to the increasing problem of abandoned shacks and garbage left behind at the end of the ice-fishing season.
"It's a real shame that we've reached this point," said Deputy Mayor Matt Alexander. "We've tried for years to work with the ice fishers to keep the area clean, but the problem has persisted."
The town's solution? Install a gate to prevent vehicles from accessing the river and setting up large structures. This move has disappointed many, including longtime ice-fishing enthusiast Mike Donovan, who has been a regular at the Renforth Wharf for over four decades.
"I understand the town's concerns about the mess, but I think there's a better way to handle it," Donovan said. "Instead of getting rid of the shacks altogether, we should work together to find a solution that preserves this unique culture."
Donovan and a group of like-minded individuals have been volunteering to help clean up the area at the end of each season. They believe that collaboration between the fishing community, the town, and government departments is key to maintaining the ice-fishing village.
"We can't let a few bad apples ruin it for everyone," Donovan added. "Let's focus on education and enforcement rather than banning shacks entirely."
The town, however, is open to reconsidering its decision if the fishing community takes a more active role in maintaining the area. Deputy Mayor Alexander emphasized the need for a unified effort.
"We're willing to work with an established association that can ensure the ice is kept clean and safe," he said. "It's time for the fishing community to step up and take responsibility."
While some businesses, like Kennebecasis Ice Adventures, are benefiting from the tent rental boom, owner Jack Ross hopes for a resolution that allows both tents and hard shacks to coexist.
"There's a balance to be struck," Ross said. "I understand the town's concerns, but I also believe in preserving the tradition and culture of ice fishing."
The fate of the ice-fishing village hangs in the balance. Will Rothesay find a way to preserve its unique charm while addressing the environmental concerns?
