The First Backcountry Trail: Connecting Summit and Wasatch Counties
The Wasatch Trails Foundation and Mountain Trails Foundation are proud to announce the completion of the BLT to WOW Connector Trail, a groundbreaking project that will revolutionize outdoor recreation in the region. This five-mile trail, set to open this spring, marks the first official connection between Wasatch and Summit counties, offering a unique and exciting experience for hikers, runners, and mountain bikers alike.
A Decade of Dedication and Collaboration
This achievement is the culmination of over a decade of hard work and collaboration. The idea was first conceived by Rick Fournier and Scott House, who envisioned a trail that would not only connect communities but also showcase the beauty of the wilderness. The project faced numerous challenges, including wildlife mitigation, political hurdles in Park City, and the treacherous terrain of Tall T peak, standing at an impressive 9,360 feet.
A Multi-Use Trail for All
The BLT to WOW Connector Trail is a multi-use, bi-directional trail that seamlessly connects Tall T to the WOWZA trails. It features an intermediate downhill mountain bike trail, a challenging mountain bike climb, and a multi-use trail for hikers and runners. Additionally, a hike-only spur named Boulder Dash adds an extra layer of adventure for those seeking a more secluded experience.
Funding and Community Support
The project received significant funding from various sources, including grants from the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, Utah Outdoor Recreation, Recreation Trails Program, and the Wasatch County Trails, Arts, and Parks Tax. The Mountain Trails Foundation played a crucial role as the trail contractor, bringing the project to life with their expertise and dedication. Despite facing setbacks, the Wasatch Trails Foundation's Executive Director, Mia Yue, expressed her gratitude for the support and perseverance of the board and their main partner, Mountain Trails Foundation, without which this trail would not have been realized.
A Shining Example of Collaboration
Lora Anthony, Executive Director of the Mountain Trails Foundation, emphasized the importance of long-term, supportive relationships between partner organizations. The WOW trail system, she noted, is a testament to the power of collaboration, showcasing what can be achieved when dedicated individuals and organizations work together. The BLT to WOW Connector Trail is not just a trail; it's a symbol of unity and a celebration of the region's natural beauty and outdoor community.
